Our hero Albert Gore, rather than re consider his opinions based on the recent revelations surrounding erroneous and unproven data which were the foundations of  the Global Warming scam, instead is employing the time tested techniques of liberals: attack the detractors, not argue the facts.

A thinly veiled reference to Fox News, the only organization  not buying into Gore’s crackpot notions.  Naturally, those that don’t agree are divisive and hateful.  I”ll remember that line when anyone ever questions Canada’s hockey supremacy.  With the combination of record cold weather experienced by most of the world, in particular the U.S. northeast as well as scandalous revelations by IPCC scientists, one would think Al would be afraid to leave his 10,000 sq. ft. mansion to face the public.  How did he get past the torches and pitchforks?

As many may know, Gore is a lawyer by training, from Harvard no less and until recently, a politician by profession.  Now he’s making a name for himself in the Oracle business.  By any measure, he’s done well for himself, parlaying a political career and inventing the internet into riding the surf atop the big wave of environmentalism.  Being an ex VP of the U.S. makes him a valuable board member for corporations.  Hedge fund Kleinwort Perkins and tech companies Apple and Google thought so, thus, his name is on their roster.

Lawyers though, are trained for one thing in their professions; they are taught to win.  Facts and circumstances are inconvenient annoyances and merely obstacles to legal victory.  Think O.J. Simpson trial.  Scientists usually work the other way.  Once something is postulated, validation of empirical data is welcomed as a means of verifying a result.  Not only that, but the theories and models are continuously tested in real life. With the questionable practices that have come to light in the Global Warming business, an honest and rational person would at least stop and consider the new developments.  It’s as if despite the rocks brought back by the lunar astronauts, Gore still insists that the moon is made of cheese. A couple of bad samples don’t destroy his conviction.  Good if you’re a lawyer.  Not so good if you are in position of causing billions of dollars of wrong headed policies.  Never one to miss a chance to spice his rhetoric with dramatic hyperbole, he states that;

“…(we) face an unimaginable calamity requiring large-scale, preventive measures to protect human civilization as we know it…”

Really?  Human civilization as we know it?  Someone’s been watching too much Lost In Space.  He goes on;

“…What is important is that the overwhelming consensus on global warming remains unchanged. It is also worth noting that the panel’s scientists — acting in good faith on the best information then available to them — probably underestimated the range of sea-level rise in this century, the speed with which the Arctic ice cap is disappearing and the speed with which some of the large glacial flows in Antarctica and Greenland are melting and racing to the sea…” 

Consensus by whom?  What does consensus have to do with fact?  Not that long ago, the consensus of medical practitioners was that bleeding a sick patient was the sure cure for maladies.  And remember, global cooling was all the rage 30 years ago.  You can’t blame Al for refuting the facts, his carefully crafted empire is melting like the ice floes that he claims.  Unfortunately the jig is not up.  The hot air racket is big business.  With the massive dollars spent to build machinery  to benefit from cap and trade nonsense, the nascent industry won’t just roll over.  However, if Al can show me some mooncheese, I’ll eat that and my divisive words with humble humility and give  money to liberal causes.  Shiver.

Guys like this drive me insane.  This article captures the standard naivete demonstrated by leftists and socialists.  Firstly, the social issue they champion is turned into a discussion of right-wrong morality.  They frame the debate as one of basic morality regardless of whether or not the consequences make any sense.  Although this author’s discussion begins with a quasi philosophical observation of society, it transmogrifies into a morality plea for the Democrats’ health care proposals.  While his heart is likely in the right place, his mental grasp of the facts are as usual for socialists, lacking.   He says,

“…Which brings me to health care: Crunch time has come on a question central to the nation’s future, where an acknowledgment is needed that, when it comes to health, we’re all in this together. Pooling the risk among everybody is the most efficient way to forge a healthier society…”

What reasonable person with any compassion could argue with that sentiment?  What mercenary group would oppose such social conscience?  The implied answer is of course, the Republicans who are “obstructing” health care reform.  The solution proposed is to have a “public option” just like Medicare and Medicaid.  The author Cohen goes on to propose,

“…All the fear-mongering talk of “nationalizing” 17 percent of the economy is nonsense. Government, through Medicare and Medicaid, is already administering almost half of American health care and doing so with less waste than the private sector. Per capita Medicare costs for common benefits grew 4.9 percent between 1998 and 2008, against 7.1 percent for private insurers. Why not offer Medicare as a choice — a choice — to everyone? Aren’t Republicans about choice?..”

The fact is, Medicare is going bankrupt.  Some say by as soon as 2017.  Medicare is funded through contributions by workers during their working years.  As the bubble of the baby boom pushes through old age, demands on the fund will prove too much as the amount of contributions dwindle and health care costs continue to escalate.  Unless Medicare receives massive injections of funds from payroll deductions, it cannot sustain itself in its present state much less include tens of millions who are not contributing to the pool.  This is the same dilemma that California faces now in their budget crisis.  Too many demands are made upon the state government without requisite income available to sustain the services wanted by the residents, many of whom are not legally citizens of the state.  In the likely event that California is forced to increase taxes to pay for the shortfall, viable businesses will die or move out of state to a less onerous operating environment, which of course crimps state income even more.  The end result is, standards come down, not up. 

If we’re going to ensure everyone is looked after, why not offer free food to everyone?  That would make as much sense.  Why not free housing?  It all sounds good.  There was an article in Bloomberg recently in which private elementary schools were bemoaning the fact that some parents in NY city were balking at the $34,000 a year tuition for primary school.  Well if the “free” public school system is so good, why would they spend almost $400,000 to school their kids before university?  The answer is opportunity.  Parents obviously don’t think the public system adequate for their children.  The parents truly believe that private schooling will open better opportunities for them.  And that’s all you can ask for.  Capitalism is about allowing people to fulfill their potential according to their efforts.  If this were not the case, the US would not have to protect their borders.  They’d all be banging on Cuba’s doors.  Oddly, you never hear of people in rafts trying to beat the Cuban immigration system.

If people of “advanced social conscience” really want to do good, they should work on increasing the competition factor among health care providers and insurers as well as changing the whole litigious environment which is largely responsible for the escalating costs in health care. There was a cartoon years ago by the genius Jim Unger, of Herman fame, where a newly born baby was being held upside down by the delivering doctor.  The caption was “Somebody get me a lawyer!”.  Sigh.

Interesting premise.  If the theory of Supernormal Stimuli which postulates that our genetic proclivities can override our conscious efforts, then much activity in western society is a waste of time and money.  The obvious things jump out as useless: weight loss programs, sex addiction therapy, heck even the prison business for repeat offenders.  For criminals, the plea of   ”the devil made me do it”  may gain credibility,  just blame it on that guy Darwin.  If we are predisposed to act or respond a certain way because of our evolutionary roots, a lot of things will have to be rethought.  This may be good news for Tiger Woods.

This article ties in somewhat to my last piece regarding genetic predisposition.   There appears to be more articles surfacing regarding the dominance of our factory wiring versus  environmental stimuli in determining why we do things.  This itself has  been and will continue to be topics for PhDs to cover and not really the point here.  What does occur to me is that the wiring of brains of people who consider themselves liberals versus those who see themselves as conservatives may have been set at birth.

The amusing on-going partisan bickering which is US politics,  has been entertaining because of the laugh out loud claims and accusations made by both sides over any particular issue.  Clearly, I think  the left are much more skilled at claiming preposterous and irrational positions than the boring conservative guys.  The issue hogging the headlines now is proposed health care reform.  The real  issue surrounds not if but how to fix the system.  But consider this passage from the linked article:

“…One might even argue that supernormal stimuli—or perhaps our reactions to them—are the biggest problems faced by affluent societies. The best available estimate is that 45,000 Americans die annually because of a lack of health insurance. Yet a recent study found that easily 20 times that number are dying every year from the effects of smoking, over-eating, excessive drinking and other bad habits, many of them arising from such supernormal stimuli as addictive tobacco, refined sugar and distilled spirits…”

So they estimate that almost a million people a year die from the effects of other bad habits annually as compared to the lack of insurance issue.  To be sure, no one encourages avoidable death, but considering the amount of money involved in this debate and the overwhelming opposition to the program as pushed by the Democrats, you would think rational heads would back off forcing it into law.

Liberals flock to the “for the good of the people” causes like the goose to the painted volleyball. The common tactic when logic and reason don’t sustain their arguments is to paint any opposers as ice hearted demons, or as the obviously unhinged Keith Obermann stated recently, “subhuman”.   It’s as if the forces of genealogy are competing  with the forces  of intellect and the brain side is greatly outmanned.  The left do themselves no favours by propagating the utterances of the Obermanns, the Shultz’s, the Matthews’, the Behars and the Garafalos.  If the theory of Supernormal Stimuli proves valid, then the out of reality ravings of these people can be excused because as we saw earlier, the devil made them say it.  But it should be made clear that what they say should be considered for what they are, primeval rants,  not intelligent discourse.

If I had a nickel for everytime a personality on the right made disparging ad hominem comments about personalities on the left, well, I may have change for a dime.  Instead, labels of stupid, racist, divisive,evil, retarded, subhuman, hateful, greedy and stupid again seem to be standard language for the left.  Fortunately, according to viewer ratings, it appears as if such wizards of wit are losing their audience.  People must be evolving.
